I
The Poem, Stanza by Stanza

Stanza 1
The Sun now rose upon the right: Out of the sea came he, Still hid in mist, and on the left Went down into the sea.
rose upon the right=太陽が右から昇る/hid in mist=霧に隠れたまま。
Stanza 2
And the good south wind still blew behind, But no sweet bird did follow, Nor any day for food or play Came to the mariners' hollo!
hollo=呼びかけの声(hello の古形)/no sweet bird did follow=あの優しい鳥(アホウドリ)はもう付いてこない。
Stanza 3★
And I had done a hellish thing, And it would work 'em woe: For all averred, I had killed the bird That made the breeze to blow. Ah wretch! said they, the bird to slay, That made the breeze to blow!
Stanza 4★
Nor dim nor red, like God's own head, The glorious Sun uprist: Then all averred, I had killed the bird That brought the fog and mist. 'Twas right, said they, such birds to slay, That bring the fog and mist.
uprist=rose(昇った/古語)/'Twas right=それは正しかった。
Stanza 5
The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew, The furrow followed free; We were the first that ever burst Into that silent sea.
furrow=船が海面に残す航跡(畝のような跡)/burst into=突き進んで入り込む。
内韻(internal rhyme)の見本:blew / flew、first / burst。
Stanza 6★
Down dropt the breeze, the sails dropt down, 'Twas sad as sad could be; And we did speak only to break The silence of the sea!
dropt=dropped/Down dropt the breeze=風がぱたりと止んだ。
Stanza 7★
All in a hot and copper sky, The bloody Sun, at noon, Right up above the mast did stand, No bigger than the Moon.
copper=銅(色)。銅板を熱したような、金属的で乾いた赤銅色の空/bloody=血のような、血まみれの/mast=マスト。
Stanza 8★
Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean.
stuck=動けずにいた/nor breath nor motion=風ひとつ、動きひとつなく/idle=何もせず止まっている。
Stanza 9★★ 最重要
Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.
boards did shrink=(灼熱で)船板が乾いて縮む/Nor any drop to drink=飲める一滴もない。
Q4(穴埋め)= dropQ5(皮肉)=ここ。 ※よくある間違い: "Nor any drop to drink" を "Nor a drop to drink" と書かない。
Stanza 10
The very deep did rot: O Christ! That ever this should be! Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs Upon the slimy sea.
the very deep=海そのもの、深海/rot=腐る/slimy=ぬるぬるした。
Stanza 11怪火
About, about, in reel and rout The death-fires danced at night; The water, like a witch's oils, Burnt green, and blue and white.
Stanza 12★
And some in dreams assurèd were Of the Spirit that plagued us so; Nine fathom deep he had followed us From the land of mist and snow.
Stanza 13渇き
And every tongue, through utter drought, Was withered at the root; We could not speak, no more than if We had been choked with soot.
utter drought=完全な渇き/withered at the root=根元から干からびて/choked with soot=煤(すす)で喉を詰まらされたように。
Stanza 14★★ 最重要
Ah! well a-day! what evil looks Had I from old and young! Instead of the cross, the Albatross About my neck was hung.
well a-day=ああ悲しや(嘆きの古語)/evil looks=憎しみのこもった目つき/from old and young=老いも若きも(全員から)/was hung=(受け身)吊るされた=乗組員が掛けた。

Study Notes

Part II

Pathetic fallacy —

IV
Practice Test

V
Short Answer — How to Write

「Explain in 1–2 sentences. (2 points)」

Template —
Coleridge uses [device / image] in the phrase "[quotation]", which creates [mood / effect]. This suggests that [meaning — link to guilt, punishment or the supernatural].

Q6 型 — 雰囲気を説明する"the bloody Sun" / "a hot and copper sky"

模範解答 A(シンプル・確実に2点)

The words "bloody" and "copper" create a burning, oppressive atmosphere, as if the sky itself were made of hot metal. The colour red also suggests blood and violence, reminding the reader of the Mariner's guilt for killing the albatross.

模範解答 B(上級・pathetic fallacy を使う)

The "hot and copper sky" and the "bloody Sun" create a suffocating, hellish mood in which there is no shade and no escape. Through this pathetic fallacy, nature itself seems to be punishing the Mariner, so the heat feels less like weather than like a sentence being carried out.
It is very hot and scary."

Instead of the cross, the Albatross"

The cross is a symbol of Christian faith and forgiveness, so replacing it with the dead albatross shows that the Mariner has lost his hope of salvation. Instead of grace, he now carries his own crime physically around his neck.

模範解答 B(上級・乗組員の役割まで言う)

By hanging the albatross where the cross should be, the crew turns the bird into a symbol of sin and makes the Mariner's guilt visible to everyone. It is significant that they, not he, hang it there: they are punishing him for a decision they themselves approved of only a few stanzas earlier.
キーワード:salvation / forgiveness / grace(救い)・burden(重荷)・visible sign of guilt(目に見える罪の印)・penance(償い)。

① Explain the irony in the stanza beginning "Water, water, every where." (2 points)

The sailors are surrounded by an entire ocean and yet they are dying of thirst, because sea water is salty and cannot be drunk. This situational irony makes their suffering crueller, since the thing that could save them is everywhere in sight but completely useless.

② What does the sailors' change of opinion reveal about them? (2 points)

The sailors judge the killing not by whether it was right but by whether the weather happens to suit them, condemning the Mariner when it is foggy and praising him when the sun shines. This shows their moral weakness, and by approving of the crime they become accomplices, which is why they are punished with him.

③ Identify one example of alliteration and explain its effect. (2 points)

In "The furrow followed free", the repeated "f" sound is soft and flowing, which makes the line move quickly and imitates the ship gliding smoothly through the water. The sound therefore reinforces the sense of easy, effortless speed just before the wind dies.
VI
The Water Task

Diagram 1 — Layered Bottle Filter

Dirty water in bottle, base cut off, upside down 1 · Large gravel / pebbles 2 · Small gravel 3 · Coarse sand 4 · Fine sand 5 · Activated charcoal 6 · Cotton wool 7 · cloth clean container then BOIL 1 minute

Layer
1. Large gravel
The top layer of large gravel traps leaves, twigs and other large pieces of dirt so that they do not block the layers below.
2. Small gravel
Smaller gravel catches medium-sized particles that pass through the first layer.
3. Coarse sand
Coarse sand removes finer pieces of soil and grit as the water slows down.
4. Fine sand
Fine sand filters out very small suspended particles, which makes the water look clear instead of cloudy.
5. Activated charcoal
Activated charcoal adsorbs bad smells, colour and some dissolved chemicals because its surface is extremely porous.
6. Cotton wool
A layer of cotton wool at the neck stops charcoal dust from falling into the clean water.
7. Cloth
A piece of cloth over the opening holds the materials in place and catches anything that escapes.
8. Boiling
Finally the filtered water must be boiled for at least one minute, because filtering removes solid particles but does not kill bacteria, viruses or parasites.

sunlight sea water cup clear plastic sheet small stone evaporation condensation SALT and dirt stay behind in the pit only pure water vapour rises → clean drinking water
A sand-and-charcoal filter can only remove solid particles, so it would not have saved the Mariner's crew: sea water is undrinkable because of the dissolved salt, which filtering cannot take out. To make sea water safe you need distillation — boiling or solar evaporation — so that only pure water vapour rises and the salt is left behind. This is exactly why there is "water, water, every where, / Nor any drop to drink."

VII
Final Check
Good luck, Sara

Part II
